The last awesome photography documentary to come out was about famed photographer, Bill Cunningham. The latest is called Everybody Street and looks to be just as good. Stoked for this to come out soon!

Exactly one year ago today, I wrote a post bidding farewell to 2010 and ringing in 2011. We say it all the time but damn… time flies! So, is it that crazy that here we are again on the verge of a new year?

In the past couple days, I kept on saying how I couldn’t wait for this year to be over with. In the span of two months, I had my car broken into, practically all my camera equipment stolen, lost my iPhone, and two days ago had $300 stolen from my wallet at the gym. All I could think about was all the shitty luck I’ve been having and how I couldn’t wait for 2012 to be here already.

But then I started to think about how truly fortunate I’ve been this year.

In the grand scheme of things, I have my health. Being a freelancer, I don’t have the luxury of a company sponsored health plan. I can’t just go to the doc and drop a $15 copay and be on my way. It’s one of the big reasons why I am so passionate about health and fitness. It’s my health insurance and short of being in an accident or getting cancer, it’s something that I have total control over. I was super bummed and upset after getting jacked but a couple days after my car was broken into and robbed of the very things that put food on my table, I learned that a friend of mine was in a serious motorcycle accident. Xander suffered collapsed lungs, broken ribs, vertebrae, and is now paralyzed from the waist down. That definitely put things into perspective for me. (Please check out Xander’s Facebook page, Xander’s Plan, to keep up with his recovery and participate in any fundraisers and events that might be going on.)

I am very grateful to say that there are things in my life that I have a true passion for. Not many folks have the opportunity to say that they are passionate about anything let alone be blessed with the opportunity to pursue those passions. Most of you know my love for photography via this blog but unless you follow me on Facebook, you don’t know how much I love to bake/cook/eat and how passionate I am about health and fitness (which often times can be misinterpreted as anger). I’m trying to figure out a way to incorporate these two things into the blog so hopefully you’ll be able to know another side of me. I will warn you that my health and fitness posts will not be sugar-coated whereas my baking posts will be… literally.

Mi familia. No one else has been there for me the way my family has. From my mama to my three sisters to my five nephews, I am so grateful for all they do and for all the things that they are to me. Just like any other family, we have our ups and downs but at the end of the day, the love and support will always be there.

Mi amigos! Literally my extended family considering I am the only one of my family members (immediate and extended) that lives here in LA. From NY to Hawaii and especially here in LA, thank you for pushing me to be better, mentoring me to be wiser, and always being there in my time of need. I’ve always been envious of folks who have huge circles of friends that have been together for years and years but how can I complain when I have some of the best personal relationships with the people I surround myself with? Huge shoutouts go to Ja+Bev, Karina, Marc, Doc Cheng, Moses+Jen, Aileen, Alaaeddine, Alan, my NY folks and all my Hawaii fam. And everyone else? I love you too!

An important part of┬ámy post a year ago had to do with a piece entitled, “Closing Cycles“. A big part of me was successful in this endeavor in not only closing chapters and moving forward but also creating new chapters in the storybook of my life’s journey. Another year has quickly gone by and I’ve been blessed in so many ways through friends and family, traveling, health, photography, training… needless to say, I am super stoked for 2012!

Leaving y’all with a random selection of images from the past year. Much love!

Little Manhattan has become one of my favorite movies as of late. It’s about a boy (Gabe) who falls for a girl (Rosemary Telesco) with NYC as their playground. There are so many hilarious scenes from this movie and it just reminds me of young love when you start to realize that girls don’t have cooties and you wanna share your Hostess Cupcakes with them instead of putting gum in their hair.

This song by Matt White from the soundtrack is my favorite. I digs!

It is our failure to become our perceived ideal that ultimately defines us and makes us unique. It’s not easy, but if you accept your misfortune and handle it right, your perceived failure can become a catalyst for profound re-invention.

lovework Love Your Work

It don’t matter what you do… if you love your work, you will become successful. It is a scientifically proven fact.

Stuck in that 9-5 that you dread so much? You have two options:

a. be grateful – most folks are getting laid off, about to get laid off, or can’t find work when all they want to do is work
b. quit

I can honestly say that since getting laid off work two years ago, I have never been more happy in my life. I get to pursue my passions and do what I love. I also own my TIME. This has allowed me to travel, to sleep in if I wanted to, to work out when the gym is the least busy. Simple but valuable things in my life.

Sure the money isn’t as good as it once was but I’ve gladly given up the money in exchange for time which, to me, is much more valuable. I can always make more money but I could never make more time. A simple lifestyle change of not coveting the unnecessary things in life will leave you with more money than you know what to do with.

If you’re unhappy with where you’re at in life, in your career, and in your relationships, what are you going to do to change it?
